Introduction to Acquired Brain Injury - 4 hour workshop

This is an introductory course that will provide participants with information on:
  • Functions of the Brain
  • Definition and Common Causes
  • Statistics
  • Recovery
  • Communication Principles
  • Effects and Support Strategies
Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have a basic understanding of the functions of the brain and of the impact an acquired brain injury (ABI) has on an individual’s life.  In addition participants will have a basic understanding of the more common impairments, behaviours and effects of ABI and how some of these can be more appropriately managed.

This workshop is most suited to individuals and organisations that have had limited exposure to persons with an ABI, and provides a very useful foundation for further behaviour training such as the Synapse Training workshop Managing Complex and Challenging Behaviour.

Managing Complex And Challenging Behaviours - 4 hour workshop

This introductory course aims to educate participants in:
  • Understanding Behaviour
  • Behaviour Management Options
  • Positive Behaviour Support
  • Techniques & Strategies
  • Communication & Interaction
  • Managing in a Crisis
Participants completing this workshop will better understand the ‘meaning’ of behaviours, and how Applied Behaviour Analysis can assist in improving the understanding and management of complex and challenging behaviours. 

The workshop provides a balance between behaviour theory (including Positive Behaviour Support), and practical tools for managing complex and challenging behaviours, with particular focus on how to manage in a crisis.

This workshop also highlights the importance of utilising proactive strategies and techniques in behaviour management (including communication); that assist in maintaining Baseline behaviours.

Learnings are reinforced in a variety of interactive exercises throughout this workshop, including behavioural scenarios where learnings can be applied.

Positive Behaviour Support (PBS) - 6 hour workshop

Upon completion of this workshop, participants will have an understanding of the philosophy of Positive Behaviour Support and how it is applied.  Through the application of Applied Behaviour Analysis, participants will be asked to challenge their perceptions of ‘behaviour’, to assist them to understand that all behaviour has a purpose. 

Participants will also explore how a Behaviour Management Plan is constructed and applied, utilising principles of quality of life, strengths, least restrictive alternative, consultation and an holistic approach.

Positive Behaviour Support has been internationally accepted as the proactive and effective way of Supporting individuals who display challenging behaviour (Dunlap et al: 2000).

Its concept is to improve both the behaviour and the quality of life of an individual (Carter Report, 2006, p.105)
