The Brain Injury Association of Queensland received the Earle Duus Memorial Award for their website and its contribution to the support and understanding of those affected by acquired brain injury.

The Earle Duus Memorial Award recipient was announced on Friday 5 October 2007 at a celebration breakfast held at the Brisbane Convention and Exhibition Centre, South Bank.

Earle Duus Award

The Earle Duus Memorial Award is presented annually to an individual or organisation for outstanding contribution towards the advancement, recognition or achievement of people with a psychiatric disability or acquired brain injury within the community. The Award is under the auspice of Open Minds and is open to any individual or group resident in Queensland.

The Award consists of a financial grant to be used in the advancement of people with psychiatric disabilities or acquired brain injury and is presented at a publicised ceremony.

The Earle Duus Memorial Award is made possible through the bequest of the late Earle Duus, a Brisbane philanthropist. Earle Duus was a financial accountant and his life passions were music and the Arts. His love of the Australian bush resulted in frequent trips to Queensland’s National Parks, which he captured in the many landscape paintings he produced in his later years. Earle Duus’ experiences living with chronic depression motivated his bequest to enable continuing resources to be available to promote people and activities that improve the lives of people with a psychiatric disability or acquired brain injury.

Other Winners

Madeline Cottee Achievement Awards were presented to Stepping Stone Clubhouse Inc and Westside Training – The My Life Program. Stepping Stone Clubhouse provide members with employment, housing, social skills and community participation. The My Life Program offered by Westside Training facilitates independent living within the community.

Open Minds congratulates all nominees on the hard work they are doing to improve the quality of life for people with a mental illness or acquired brain injury and is thrilled to be able to recognise the achievements of all three Award winners.
