Hello [FIRSTNAME] [LASTNAME], welcome to the Brain-Mail e-Newsletter for April 2009.
Brain Injury Association of Queensland Updates
General Updates:
Come Look At the New BIAQ Website!
The new design is hopefully cleaner and easier to use; several upgrades have been done to increase functionality. The site is not fully complete as there are a few graphics and site content to update... this will be done over the next couple of weeks. Any feedback is most welcome.

Service and Government Updates
around Queensland:
GOLD COAST: Shepherd Community Services – New Acquired Brain Injury Social Group
Shepherd Community Services is an organisation that supports people with a disability across the Gold Coast region. We currently have services available and wanted to let you know a bit more about us. Shepherd Community Services has the following services available:
- 1:1 Respite Care: individualised support at home or in the community
- Group Activities: we offer 40 different small group activities each week.
The one to one support is very flexible and can assist you to access any range of community activities or spend time at home. Generally we are able to provide 3 hours of support per week.
Our Group activities are based from our centres at Tugun, Broadbeach Waters and Upper Coomera. We have a huge range of activities and we are keen to start up new groups that are specifically designed around the interests and needs of people with an Acquired Brain Injury. If you and other people on the Gold Coast are interested in starting a NEW group, it would be up to the group to talk about what type of activity you would like to do whether it is computers, listening to bands, sports, socialising, art, kayaking or working on the farm. Shepherd Community Services would then help to organise the activity and provide professional, enthusiastic, experienced staff to provide support.
To access our services or refer a friend, please contact our
Family Resource Coordinators (Andrea and Kirsty) on 55922247 or email

Information sessions have commenced in Far North Queensland about the Skills To Enable People and Communities (STEPS) Program. Sessions are to be conducted in Mossman, Atherton, Mareeba and Innisfail from Tuesday 12- Friday 15 May.
Description: The STEPS Program is a new Queensland Health service. STEPS aims to establish sustainable networks of support for adults with brain injury or stroke in Qld and their families and friends, in their local communities around Queensland.
The 6-week STEPS Skills Program is led by a local person, who has been trained by STEPS as a leader. This can also be the springboard for a longer-term, ongoing, local STEPS Network Group. STEPS is best suited for people at least one year post-injury or stroke.
STEPS is hoping to return to FNQ in July/August to train leaders.
