Service and Government Updates around Queensland

New allied health items will be added to the Medicare Benefits Schedule on 1 November 2008.
The new items will allow people of Aboriginal and Torres Strait Islander descent who have had a health assessment to receive a Medicare benefit for follow-up allied health services. To access these items, patients must be referred to an eligible allied health provider by their GP.

December 3rd International Day of People with Disability
This day has been created to promote achievements of those with a disability, create awareness of disability issues and the benefits of an inclusive society. The day provides an opportunity for disability services, people with disabilities, and the general community to come together to promote the message of inclusion. Training, Conference and Expos

Gold Coast: Building the Future with Family Carers – National Conference on Caring 2009
Date: 9th and 10th March, 2009
Where: Royal Pines Resort, Gold Coast
Description: A National Conference hosted by Carers Australia to develop and exchange ideas and practice that will enhance carers’ health, well-being, financial security and choices – now and into the future.
Cost: full registration $500 for carers/students who register before 1st February or $350 for day registration prior to 1st February. Conference organisers are offering a limited number of carers partial or full subsidies to attend the conference. To access the subsidy carers must fill out a Carer Subsidy Application form.

Brisbane: International Day of People with Disability with the Aboriginal & Torres Strait Islander Disability Network of QLD
When: Wednesday, 3rd December 2008, 10-4pm

Brisbane: Picnic in the Park
When: Wednesday 17th December, midday - 3pm.
Where: New Farm Park (near the rotunda)
The Hepatitis Council of Queensland, Brisbane Youth Service, Queensland
Shelter, and Queensland Injectors Health Network have organised a picnic in the park.  Planned activities include free massages by the Three Minute Angels, drumming, karaoke and live entertainment. The picnic will provide people attending with a healthy lunch, including both vegetarian and meat options.
